Most people enjoy designing their own bespoke kitchens – and why not, after all it is good fun! But whether you are wanting to take your kitchen designs to your local independent or high class designer, there are a few kitchen design mistakes that we will help you avoid:

1. BIN

A highly used facility that often gets neglected and forgotten in the design is the bin. Preference is always for an internal one, as they are much tidier. Our recommendation is to choose a unit that is 500 – 600mm wide to get a decent size that can also fit your recycling. If you want a free standing bin let it be known – as you may find if you’re not careful there is no room left for one of those either!

2. Cabinet colours can change

Be aware that the lighting in the showroom might be completely different to that of your kitchen space. At Church Farm Kitchens we will always encourage you to take a colour sample door home to check! The lighting can also make a huge difference to how it looks with your flooring and even your worktop.

3. Where are your items new home?

It’s important before designing a kitchen to asses what items are going to need a new home. From bread makers, to food mixers, baking bowls to coffee machines, they all need a place to go! Whether it may be in cupboards, larders or drawers, make sure you have made space for them.

4. Ovens too high

With the average height of women in Britain being 5ft 3”, its very important to look at the height element of cooking appliances. Although an oven side by side in an oven tower is always preferable, there may not always be the space. Therefore, if you do have an oven and combi oven in one tower, ensure this is made to suit your height and you’re not having to struggle. The NEFF hide and slide does also make it easier!

5. Short term designs

Many of us look at our wants and needs in a kitchen at our current moment in time. However, for a kitchen to have longevity, we need to look at least into the next 10 years. For example, if you are starting with weak hands, make sure you choose a handle that you can easily grip if your strength does deteriorate. Or you may be thinking of grandchildren coming up soon, and want to ensure the kitchen design is child friendly and accommodating. Whichever the outcome, its always beneficial to ensure this kitchen meets your needs now and in the future.
